Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) is an organization that creates ready-to-eat meals and ships them to various places around the world which are experiencing food shortages.
Lord of Life has been involved with FMSC for over 10 years. We support orphanages in Jamaica and feeding programs in Uganda through FMSC.
In Jamaica, education through "basic schools" are required for children. However, due to the economic and physical situation for parents, many children are unable to attend as their parents are unable to provide the required school uniform or the transportation to send their little ones to schools that are located miles from home. By providing one nutritious meal, parents are encouraged to send their children to school. Their limited funds can essentially be redistributed to cover the cost to transport their children or to cover the cost of one uniform per school year. Once in school, children are able to learn with a full belly that provides nourishment to the mind and soul. Parents quickly see the advantage of sending their children to school as the "free" meal has improved their children's health and they are able and willing to learn and have the potential for a greater future.
In orphanages, "throw away" children receive FMSC food which allows them to grow strong. At West Haven Children's Home, an orphanage for disabled children, Mission Jamaica missionaries have personally delivered, stored, and fed FMSC food to the children. We have seen the difference this one meal a day has made from one year to another. Children who were unable to sit up are now sitting and standing and walking! Children unable to feed themselves, can now hold a spoon, feed themselves, AND help other children at meal time. Children who crawled on the ground eating anything they could find, no longer "grab and run" in fear that someone else will take their tiny food morsel from them. Instead they sit together in fellowship and eat a meal with their new family.
A single bag of food, which provides meals for six children, costs around $1.15 to produce, and 94 percent of all donations to FMSC goes directly toward the food program. A $35 donation provides one meal to 182 children. Our goal is to feed every one of these children for an entire year.
Individuals and families at Lord of Life are continuing to work toward helping Feed My Starving Children to meet their goal to "feed God's starving children hungry in body and spirit."
